The yacht this hatch was for had an aluminum deck, however the hatch covering the lazarette was made in laminated plywood and overlaid in teak. The plywood had finally given up after 40 years, so a new hatch was needed.
It was fabricated from 6mm 6061 aluminium plate and 25mm box section 5236 grade ali. The hinges were turned from 5236 round bar and fitted with Delrin hinge pins that have threaded inserts to hold them in place.
The handle and locking mechanism were also custom made and the whole assembly painted to match the deck paint (in Awlgrip G-Line). There is also an inspection hatch located in the hatch for the installation of the emergency self steering setup for this yacht as it is immediately above the rudder stock.
The hatch was installed with a gas strut to hold it open to avoid it falling on stray fingers when closing.
